Synopsis
A contemporary tale of the quest for fortune in the world of West Texas oil rigs. Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore filmed some of their scenes in Weatherford, Texas in May 2024. #44,24 (2022). Landman is an immersive exploration of the oil business, offering a rare and unflinching look at the challenges, ambitions, and personal sacrifices associated with the industry. It dives into the details of the industry, showing how difficult and complex it is, without sugarcoating anything.
Billy Bob Thornton is phenomenal as always
The realism here is unmistakable and you really feel like you’re getting a glimpse into what most of us take for granted. He’s very good at playing rough but very compelling characters. However, I have to agree with some of the negative criticisms about his character’s family drama, which isn’t my favorite part of the series either. Sometimes it’s a bit much, but I understand why. Family dynamics, love them or hate them, are part of the reality that the show aims to capture.
Her speech was fiery and she completely turned the tables
That said, episode 4 “The Sting of a Second Chance” absolutely blew me away. This episode introduced a new kind of energy to the lawyer character, she is an all-around powerhouse and the perfect foil to Billy’s character’s wife. Watching her crush the arrogant lawyers at the crime scene was one of those stand-up-and-clap moments. It was inspiring to see someone so intelligent and unflappable take her place in such a male-dominated business. Watching her tell them to work out a surrender instead of a deal was one of the most satisfying moments I’ve ever seen.
That line stuck with me
Another standout storyline is Billy’s son, who is determined to make or break his own oil company from the start. His drive and ambition are inspiring, especially when he tells his father, “I have a dream.” It’s not a play yet, but I’ll find out. It reflects courage, ambition, and navigating the hard truths of life and business. Overall, Landman is worth watching, even if you don’t understand the oil industry like I do. It’s deep, intense, and offers a glimpse into an industry we all depend on but rarely think about.
It’s not just about success; it’s about lasting failures, triumphs, and everything in between
What I love most about Landman is how it reflects the dual nature of pursuing a dream. The series captures this perfectly and is a lesson for entrepreneurs, business owners, or anyone with a big goal. Overall, it’s a deep and thought-provoking show about the human spirit because it’s about the oil industry. Highly recommended!
